Assault on Justice

Written by Marty on April 25th, 2005

The Apostle Paul wrote the Galatians, “If any man preacheth any other gospel to you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.” (Galatians 1: 9) There are those who will take the Gospel of Christ and twist it to their own benefit. Some will do so to steal your money, while others will have higher goals of power. What ever their motivation the fact remains that they are guilty of taking the name of God in vain! The New York Times reports

As the Senate battle over judicial confirmations became increasingly entwined with religious themes, officials of several major Protestant denominations on Thursday accused the Senate Republican leader, Bill Frist, of violating the principles of his own Presbyterian church and urged him to drop out of a Sunday telecast that depicts Democrats as “against people of faith.”

There is a reason why the Apostle condemned such actions for besides leading people away from the Lord it also divides the body of Christ. Jesus said in Mark 3:25 “if there is division in a house, that house will come to destruction;” although that is not the goal of these Conservatives it most definitely will have the same results. This is simply a grab for power for the Senate has already confirmed more than 200 of Mr. Bush's nominations only rejecting 10 of the most radical extremist.

This past March, two radical right-wing evangelical leaders – Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council and James Dobson of Focus on the Family – met privately with supporters at a conference in Washington. The Los Angeles Times obtained an explosive audio recording of that meeting in which the two leaders laid out their strategy to stack the courts, bypass the Constitution and destroy the system of checks and balances in the federal government. As Perkins said, “There's more than one way to skin a cat, and there's more than one way to take a black robe off the bench.” Their idea? Perkins and Dobson want to skip the constitutional process of impeachment and remove judges who don't toe their ultra-right partisan line using a back door method: stripping funding from their courts to hamstring their work until they are forced out. Dobson spelled it out, saying, “Very few people know this, that the Congress can simply disenfranchise a court. They don't have to fire anybody or impeach them or go through battle. All they have to do is say the 9th Circuit doesn't exist anymore and it's gone.” link

The use of these nefarious means show a true lack of faith by the religious right for if what they stand for was in the will of the Almighty nothing could stand in their way. As Romans 8:31 says, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” These men are not relying on God, nor are their inspiration the will of God; rather they are using Christianity in the same manner as extremists like Osama uses Islam! What they are doing is pure Blasphemy for Christianity is not confined to any political party. There are many good Christians who are Conservative Republicans as there are good Christians who are Liberal Democrats.

National Council of Churches General Secretary Bob Edgar has challenged the tactics as “dangerous and divisive” to the nation's religious and public life. In a statement issued Tuesday, Edgar says:

“We are surprised and grieved by a campaign launched this week by Family Research Council and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, who said that those who disagree with them on President Bush’s judicial nominees are 'against people of faith.'

“This campaign, which they are calling 'Justice Sunday,' should properly be called 'Just-Us' Sunday. Their attempt to impose on the entire country a narrow, exclusivist, private view of truth is a dangerous, divisive tactic. It serves to further polarize our nation, and it disenfranchises and demonizes good people of faith who hold political beliefs that differ from theirs.

How is the Church dictating to the country? Shouldn't the winner of the election have the right to appoint who his wishes? I mean there has never been a filibuster of judges before right? Why now?

How many Judges were blocked by the Republicans during the Clinton years?

In fact, while Democratic senators used the filibuster to block 10 of Bush's 229 first-term judicial nominees, the Republican-controlled Senate prevented approximately 60 Clinton nominees from even receiving a hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, much less a vote on the Senate floor. And while Senate Republicans under Clinton strictly enforced a “blue slip” rule — which allows one home-state senator to prevent a nomination from moving forward — they greatly relaxed this rule under Bush to circumvent Democrats' objections to several nominees.

Good post Rick, it seems that these guys want it all of nothing that's why the Republican invented the term Nuclear option.

I am just sick that someone like James Dobson would get into the lying about the filibustering of Judges.

Focus on the Family founder and chairman James C. Dobson made a series of false and misleading claims about the Senate's use of the filibuster to block judicial nominees.  For more click here.

How can someone who is suppose to be a Christian leader lie though his teeth like that?

The Neo-Cons have made a lot of noise of the 10 nominees who were rejected saying that it was an attack of people of faith. One must ask then were the 200 that were confirmed atheist? Where they pro-choice? The answer is no, they are ultra conservatives, so what is the real reason for the rejection of the 10? The answer is that besides extremism, corruption which seems to be running amuck in the Republican Party these days. The use of religion is only a last ditch effort of the evil agenda of the far right. The question is how can someone who claims to be a Christian outright lie about the filibusters of the past?
