Born Again ~ The Means

      Life is full of so much trouble that it is easy to get caught up in the turmoil and feel hopeless.   Our jobs, families, friends, schools, and neighbors can be very trying at times.  We can find ourselves wishing to take a vacation from life, but what is needed is a new life.  A life where we can let go of the troubles and refocus on what really matters.  On a lonely night a man named, Nicodemus came to Jesus asking what he needed to do to be saved.  Jesus told him that he needed to be born anew, which brings us to one of the most confused terms that we use, “Born again.”

   When we use the term “born again” what goes through the minds of most people?  Jesus was the first to use the term when speaking to Nicodemus.

John 3:3  Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags” />kingdom of God.

4  Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?

5  Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

6  That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

   This is one of those terms that we use that bring much confusion to the world.  Nicodemus was confused when Jesus first said it to him, and ask “how can a man be born when he is old?”  The easiest way to explain it is as a new beginning, a new start in life, but far more than that as it is becoming a whole new person.  For when we surrender our lives to Jesus he begins to transform us into new people.  As the Apostle Peter said;

1 Peter 1:23  Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

   To best comprehend the meaning of the term we must look at what caused the separation from God.  When man first fell from grace he committed what is known as the Original Sin.  Below is a link which fully explains the concept of Original Sin.

Great Christian Doctrine of

Arguments to the Contrary answered

Jonathan Edwards

It describes “the doctrine of original sin is… not only the depravity of nature, but the imputation of Adam’s first sin; or, in other words, the liableness or exposedness of Adam’s posterity, in the divine judgment, to partake of the punishment of that sin.”
This is to say that the sin nature is pass on generation after generation.  This is not by DNA but rather by being born with that which separates us from God.  To best understand that we need to look at how the separation first happened.

Genesis 3:1  ¶Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
2  And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
3  But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
4  And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
5  For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

It was and is this desire to be our own gods that separated us from God and propagates that separation.  This desire is not only the longing to rule over others but also to be independent of all who would rule over us.  This would also include God, as we in this separated state do not seek His will in our lives, but rather are self-centered individuals.  What most people find out after a life of self indulgence is as King Solomon wrote in Ecclesiastes 1:2, “all is vanity” or “all the ways of man are to no purpose.”  The only cure is to start over with a full dependence on God, letting him mold and shape your life.  This rebirth only happen when we give all that we are to the Lord.  That means such things as our egos, the thinking of ourselves before others must go.  There is such a release upon our souls when we humble ourselves in this manner.  Then he begins to transform us into his children.
  Throughout our history Mankind has tried to enforce certain rules of conduct on society.  The problem has always been that such laws were only effective when someone was watching, for people were always looking for a way around the rules.  This was the problem with the laws given by God; man wanted to do what he thought best and was forever breaking those laws.  Sadly when man went his own way mankind suffered, for God really does know best!  All of our miseries (wars, famous, many diseases) are the product of going our own way.  Even when we have tried to follow God’s rules, we have failed!  What was needed was to change the very nature of mankind; this is what we mean by the term “born again”.  The writer of Hebrews was talking about this “New Covenant” when he wrote;

Hebrews 8:7  For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.
8  For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:
9  Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.
10  For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:
11  And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.
12  For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.
13  In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.
With this state of a new nature, we find ourselves at peace with God, our fellow man and our environment.  That is right, our environment!  This is because we think more of how our actions will affect others.  It is not that we love trees over people, rather that we love the people who will need all the resources of the earth in the future.  We begin to think of others first, this is why Jesus said;

Luke 10:27  And he, answering, said, Have love for the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and for your neighbour as for yourself.
It is this New Birth that makes us new people, able to enjoy the peace of God.  It is my hope that all reading this will find that peace.
