Hope and Predictions

   As we begin a new year and possibly a new era we all have hopes for 2009. What are your hopes and predictions for the year? These will be cataloged and in a year from now we can look to see who was right or came the closest.

       My hope differs from my predictions for this year. My hope would take a miracle and I do not see how anything short of that could bring an immediate change that so many are hoping for. There are some things that I believe will be immediate, such as the spying on private citizens and the incarceration individuals without any legal recourse.

       As to the economy, I believe it will take time to undo the damage. My prediction is that it will take no less than three months to even feel the first trickling of the economy moving upwardly. Within six months we should be able to recognize that the recovery has started and within nine months feel some relief. It will most likely be a year or more before the whole Nation will see the economic light at the end of the tunnel.

    MY HOPE IS THAT AMERICANS WILL COME TOGETHER TO BACK UP THIS MAN, OBAMA, WHO IS A MAN WHO REALLY LOVES THIS COUNTRY AND ITS PEOPLE AND IT SHOWS.  PEOPLE FLOCK TO HIM AS THEY CAN SEE HE IS SINCERE AND IF AMERICANS BACK HIM HE CAN DO SOME GOOD.

    HIS BACKGROUND IS WHAT MADE HIM THE MAN HE IS.  HE DID NOT HAVE VERY WEALTHY PARENTS TO SHIELD HIM – HE FACED THINGS MOST OF US KNOW NOTHING ABOUT – A DIVIDED FAMILY BETWEEN WHITE AND BLACK – RACIAL PREJUDICE – HAVING TO GET GOOD GRADES IN ORDER TO FURTHER HIS EDUCATION – SO MANY LADDERS TO CLIMB, BUT HE DID NOT FEAR TO CLIMB THEM AND REACHED THE TOP.

      BUT HE IS NOT DONE.  HE WANTS GOOD THINGS FOR ALL AMERICANS AND PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD.  THIS IS OBVIOUS TO MANY.  IT SEEMS THE ONLY ONES THAT WANT TO TEAR HIM DOWN ARE THOSE WHO ARE AFRAID THEY MAY NOW HAVE TO PAY MORE TAXES TO PAY FOR THIS UNDECLARED WAR THEY WANTED AND IT WAS FOR SELFISH REASONS. THEY WANTED OTHERS TO FIGHT IT AND PAY FOR IT, NOT THEMSELVES.  THEY THOUGHT THEY WOULD GAIN BY IT AND ARE NOW BITING THE DUST AND THEY DO NOT LIKE THE TASTE OF IT.   THEY ARE WELL AWARE OF THIS BUT WOULD NEVER ADMIT IT, EVEN TO THEMSELVES.

    I HOPE AMERICANS WILL GIVE THIS MAN THE BACKING HE NEEDS TO MAKE THIS COUNTRY AND THE WORLD A PEACEFUL PLACE AGAIN WHERE WE CAN START TO LIVE AS WE ONCE DID, WITHOUT FEAR, NOT OF OTHER NATIONS, BUT THE PEOPLE IN POWER IN OUR OWN COUNTRY.

    Unfortunately it will take much longer than a few months for the economy to recover. And it is going to get worse before it gets better. All we can hope for is that people can hang on the best they can to try and weather the devastation that has not yet peaked. Hopefully the 'have's' will extend a hand to the 'have-nots'. This will be a year of tightening our belts and finding out what true necessities are. What I would like to see is people putting family and friends before things. I would like to see the financial crisis bring people closer instead of driving people farther apart, as I believe it will. Money tends to isolate people.

    my prediction is that little will change in the next year. i hope the economic plunge will slow down.
    i predict jay leno will go on telling bill and hilary clinton jokes till he dies, which is why i don't watch his show, it's just damned tedious now.

    This could actually be a fun thread to review 12 months from now.

    Let me see now….I hope that the war will end but I predict that it wont.  I hope that our jobs that are being outsourced outside the US will start to return but I predict that they wont.  I hope that the price of oil remains this low at least through the cold winter.  I predict that in the coldest part of the year (the end of January)  it will start to climb back up.  I hope that the new President will be able to make changes for the postive but I predict that it will be the same old thing different day.  I hope that taxes will go down but I predict they will rise.  I hope that we dont get as much snow this year in the NE as last year.  I predict that we wont.

    Work hours are going to be cut but  taxes are going to double…..I'm predicting a lean year for myself.  It would be helpful if gasoline prices stayed low, but I think that would only happen if the global economy remains sluggish which is a bad thing.  I was hoping to take a couple of weeks to travel out west this summer but it's looking kind of iffy.  Hope other people do better.

    It would be nice if it were so but I tend to believe a trends forecaster named Gerald Celente and he says we're in for a deep recession/depression.  This mess isn't over yet, we still have the crash of the commercial real estate market to hit.  He says we've allowed ourselves to be dominated by 'superstores' like Walmart and IMO pissed away the jobs that kept the Mom and Pop shops going.  WE HAVE NO MANUFACTURING TO HAUL OUR BUTTS OUT OF THIS HOLE!  WE'VE SENT ALL OUR JOBS TO CHINA!  And we've sold our souls to the company store for cheap goods, 'bargains'!  The only way we'll get out of it is by American entrepreneurs working out of their garage, not by Walmart giving everyone minimum wage jobs at less than 40 hours a week to keep their 'costs' down.  Keeping their costs down means no jobs for us.  When we finally realize this we'll be on our way up.  I am hoping fervently that realization will be in no more than a year for all our sakes.

    z——I have a few predictions.  Some a're sort of “duh!” predictions, but I'll mention them anyway.

    1)  I predict that Republicans who supported Bush will gradually and deliberately avoid making positive comments about him or his administration.  I think we'll be seeing fewer people who admit to having supported Bush or Cheney or any of their policies, and there will suddenly be a huge surge of people who claim to be “independent conservatives”——who never actually completely trusted Bush, you understand, but just pretended to support him in a spirit of national unity.     ;>)

    2)  I predict that a LOT of people (supporters as well as nonsupporters) will be disappointed with Obama during the coming year, because he won't be able to work the miracles that so many are expecting from him.

    3)  I predict that Brooke Palin won't be marrying Levi Johnston in 2009 (if ever).

    4)  I predict that Rush Limbaugh will have more drug related problems.

    5)  I predict that Caroline Kennedy won't be appointed to the U.S. Senate.

    6)  I predict that the economy will continue to get worse during the coming year.

    There is no hope. There will be no more prosperity. The corporations will take their money and run to Asia wich has a young, vibrant population to escape our nation of retiring and worn out baby boomers. Millions will die of starvation and disease. I only hope I die sooner rather than later. I do not really want to see America hit rock bottom.

  15. Anonymous says:

    My hopes are to get out of the Middle East. Our duty, if there ever was one, is over, finished. Besides this war costing our demise we can't deal with more deaths. I'd like to see the soldiers at home.. protecting OUR borders. We need to repair our own country and take steps immediately.

    My prediction is that things will become much worse. You can't expect to correct all these republican mistakes by simply moving into the White House. But I honestly believe Obama is on the right track considering this horrendous mission he's undertaking. We will have to take baby steps and have patience even if we don't understand the process. We won't even begin …ever….to understand the reasons why this or that  is done or said. But I predict some will continue to whine and complain about everything Pres Obama does. All  I have to say about that is…..thank God and most Americans believe Obama was the right choice.  Personally I'm going to say a prayer every night for us to rise above all this. And as Americans I know we will.

                I must say that I totally agree with you and your common sense predictions.  In fact, many of my friends say practically the same things that you wrote.  It will take Obama and Biden a long time and a lot of hard work to straighten out Bush and Cheney's huge mess that are being left for them.  It's been reported that we are in much deeper financial trouble than originally thought, which comes as no surprise, knowing what sneaky and greedy liars Bush and Cheney have proven themselves to be.  I know there will be zillions of happy people all over the world who will thank God on January 20, 2009 to finally, after putting up with eight years of lies,

    greed and deceit from the Bush and Cheney gang,  we will finally have an intelligent, decent and truly patriotic man in our whitehouse.  God Bless Barrack Obama, Joe Biden and their cabinet.  I know they will do well… It will just take time and patience.

         GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS… BRING THEM HOME SOON…

    GOD BLESS AMERICA…

    Amen, Mims.  We will have to be patient for a time because things will get worse before they get better, IMO.

    I will be heartened if the next administration sets our feet on a path to recovery in the next four years.  It will take years to undo what Bush/Cheney have done in their supreme greed.

    Well said. Other than that my hope is unity between the parties. But With the last 8 years being filled with republican greed, lies and abuse toward Americans I'm not hopeful this can occur.

    I predict that the $230 billion tax cut (so it seems) for American's from the decrease in tax prices, won't last until the summer. Taxes on gas will be going up and up and up and the price of gas will reverse and start going up. Can't we EVER catch a break?

    I predict that the financial crisis in this nation will continue and the RWer's will start blaming Obama the day he's sworn into office. Oh hell, they are blaming him NOW, fools that they are.

    I predict that the Republican Liberal Hater's will fight health care for all with everything they have because they are basically selfish people.

    I predict it will become illegal for the gun nuts to continue collecting semi-automatic assault weapons.

    Have I given you the impression I have no faith in Republican's as 'human beings?' I HOPE SO!

    I HOPE Bush & his cohort's will be held accountable for war crimes against humanity and for forsaking the US Constitution for their own selfish reasons.

    It is never foolish to hope and always foolish to predict. So my hope is that people will start to live within their means, so that their children won't be reduced to begging. And I hope that people start to realize that violence is a tool of last resort, not first resort. And I hope my daughter will continue to complete classes in HS and a replacement for her recently totaled car. And I hope I will get more exercise this year at the YMCA pool. And I hope my curiosity will never flag.

  26. Anonymous says:

    This thread should be entertaining.

    I see Obama going to the left while encouraging people to believe in government. Something along the lines of Kennedy's speech, “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.”

    People are strange creatures. They will endure suffering if they have a “belief”. We hear a lot, today, about a spiritual vacuum. The populace is ripe for a “belief” and if Obama can tap into that it will be clear sailing.

    So, I see hard times but happier people. Strange, huh?

  27. Anonymous says:

    This is a global economic downturn, Obama can't fix it, no politician can. we have been living on a lie for years and years and years and the truth is starting to come out. The lie is you can get richer and richer and richer forever and ever and ever, without producing something real and selling it. Fairytale money has come to an end.
    This won't be fixed in one year, without radical, and I really do mean radical inovative and global thinking, this mess will last……….decades.
    My hope is that our leaders are bright enough and brave enough to do what needs to be done. My prediction is they won't be, they will struggle to maintain the false economy we have lived under up until now, even though it died already.
    Gordon Brown is working very hard to do just that, and making matters worse while he does it. I think here in Britain we will have a general election before the year is out and the Tory party will win, but not by a landslide, and in the end it will make little difference because Cameron certainly isn't bright enough or brave enough to do what has to be done.
    What I think has to be done is this, all debt has to be written off, that is national, international, corperate and personal debts, all of them cancelled and start again.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~#~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  28. Anonymous says:
    I agree with you in some respects. Where a country's debt clearly cannot be repaid it should be written off. I am sure there are instances in the world of business, too, but … such a scheme would be open to the worst abuses. Government auditors would have to make very detailed assessments, taking into consideration directors families and non beneficiary run companies as well as Swiss bank accounts and companies listed in such places as the Cayman Islands. I wonder if the time and cost required would be self defeating. People like Madoff will be sitting up in the trees ready to pounce on every opportunity.
    Another point is that if all debts were written off today, by tomorrow we would be in the same situation as before the write off.
  29. Anonymous says:
    I don't think we would get back to the same position very qucikly, if ever. It would have to be a blanket write off, no audit needed then. All mortgages cleared, that would put spending power in peoples pockets for a start. All credit card debt cancelled, same effect. All international debt gone, same effect. All the banks, closed and new ones opening everywhere, bit of confusion there I grant. All companies who have some cash still solvent and the rest at least have a blank sheet to start from.
    And what would happen to the money 'you' owe 'me' for one hundred buses or whatever. If you dont pay me I can't pay my staff, my utilities, my suppliers or myself. Should healthy busineses be permitted to renege on their debts? How would people make money to keep the wheels of industry turning?
    What is a debt? Does the company in which I invest have to continue to pay their dividends? What happens to the millions of accounts held in the millions of companies? Do I have to continue to pay for my new car? My taxes (debt to the government), Insurances? Or can I reap the rewards without laying down anything?
    Do we start again from nothing, much as Pol Pot tried to do?
    No. But, if Mary Smith has no income and is unlikely to get an income because she is homeless because she owes 20 grand on her credit cards it is a bit pointless adding x% per month on the outstanding amount. Better to put a red line under it and delete her from the list of customers.
    I PREDICT THE ECONOMY WILL GET WORSE BEFORE IT GETS BETTER.  IT REALLY DEPENDS ON HOW ITS HANDLED AS TO WHETHER WE SEE ANY CHANGE IN THE ECONOMY. I HOPE IT WILL GET BETTER SOON BUT I DON'T SEE THAT HAPPENING.
    I PREDICT ALOT OF CHANGES, THAT PEOPLE ARE GOING TO BE DISSATISFIED WITH, SUCH AS UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE.
    I PREDICT PEOPLE ARE GOING TO PAY MORE TAXES THEN EVER BEFORE IN ORDER TO GET THE ECONOMY GOING AGAIN, AND PEOPLE WILL STILL HAVE HARD TIMES/
    THE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL IS A LONG WAYS OFF, AND I HOPE WE DON'T RUN OUT OF GAS TRYING TO GET WHERE THERE IS THAT LIGHT.
    Wouldn't it be great if we really knew what the future will bring?  What we are doing, then, is hoping and dreaming.
    Like all of you, I don't have a crystal ball, and even if I did, I suspect it would be just as muddled and confused as we are.
    What I am hearing is that we are mostly in agreement about what needs to be done, but there's a wide variety of opinions about how it should be done.  Most are good, but there's one I have  problems with:
    Cancel all debts, both individual and public.  As one retired, I am concerned about what would happen to social security and pension plans. Many of them are made up of individual contributions and corporate or governmental contributions.  Which if any, is considered debt?  How about the IRA's, Stocks, and interest bearing accounts?  Does this interest become debt?  Stocks?  Does any appreciation over the purchase price, which a stockholder doesn't receive until he sells the stock, is that debt?  Theoretically I could sell my stock, and the price I would normally be entitled to receive would become debt.
    I don't see that it is clear cut what constitutes debt and what isn't.  This poses more questions than answers.
    According to the latest figures, we have about 4 million people that are unemployed.  That's out of a workforce of, what?  100 Million?  It would seem to me that this should be our number one priority, get these people back to work.
    Does anyone have logical answers for all our questions?
    May you live in interesting times
    I know that sounds trite but think. How many abandoned factories and shops are there in your town? Who is responsible for their upkeep? What is the cost to the town?
    Now get a dozen unemployed people who want to work and let them use a premises free of charge. Let them make gizmos. Anything that is saleable that doesn't require enormous investment. trinkets, furniture, anything. Continue to pay them Social security or whatever the american equivalent is. Appoint an independant auditor to oversee the finances. If and when they turn a profit charge them a pepercorn rent and gradually increase it. If one out of four such schemes work you could reduce your jobless be a very appreciable amount.
    PREDICTIONS:
    Congress will continue to bail out different segments of the economy.   It could be the retail, credit card, and/or the pension sectors.   It will, most likely, include a bail-out package to (at least) three individual states.
    More businesses will close and more people will lose their jobs.
    Two more massive waves of foreclosures will occur.
    A stimulus package will pass.   Unfortunately, greed and corruption will run rampart throughout the package and, once again, “we the people” will shrug it off and consider it business as usual.    The majority will have no concern about the debt they're leaving behind for their children and grandchildren.   It's going to be all about, “instant gratification.”
    Chrysler and GM will either merge *or* one will fail.
    Obama will disappoint many of the people who voted for him.   He will NOT (as promised) be able to end the war in the Middle East.
    The price of gas will increase and stabilize around $4 a gallon.
    The United States of America will move at a faster pace towards Socialism.   More and more people will make excuses, blame someone else, and look toward government for salvation.   “From each according to his ability, To each according to his need.”
    Immigration reform will pass … against the wishes of “we the people” … to increase the voting power of Democrats.   The excuse will be family reunification.
    Under pressure from a Democratic Congress, income taxes will increase.   Plus, hidden taxes will suddenly pop up on all sorts of things.
    Universal health care will fail.
    Education reform will fail.
    Terrorist activity will increase around the world.
    HOPES:
    I hope I'm wrong.
    This christian is talking about tickets and you were talking about jail time…about religious police enforcing the definition of adultery by a certain religion…his. Tickets are not civil…jail time is not civil. In criminal code, there is only one plaintiff necessary, the state. When activity is covered by criminal code, the police have the right to “gain access” with “reasonable cause” if they believe criminal activity is taking place. The state can bring criminal charges as the plaintiff whether the “victim” “files charges” or not. This falacy that the victim must file charges for criminal prosecution to commence is just that, a falacy. Once something becomes criminal all kinds of things change.
