Letter to Police Chiefs Around the Country
In the past, some police departments have forbidden their officers from engaging in any political activity. Where this may have violated those officer’s Constitutional rights, the goal was a good one. To have a fair justice system, it must be also unbias.
If there was an altercation between a Black man and a White man, and the officer was Black and only arrested the White man, or if the officer was White and only arrested the Black man, people would be screaming bias! Most of us would agree that both men should be arrested, and the decision as to who is at fault should rest with a judge, not with the arresting officer.
In the last year, we saw two different forms of justice employed by the police around the country. When peaceful protesters gathered to demonstrate against the wrongful death of George Floyd, the police fired upon them as if they were a riotous mob. However, when there was a riotous mob seizing the Capitol, the police were absent! Recently, there have been cases when Far-Right-wing thugs known as the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers have attacked peaceful protesters and reporters while the police stood by and did nothing! Of late, there have been all-out fights between these Right-wing terrorists and the Anti-Fascists, in which the police did nothing but watch. This is unacceptable and a violation of the oath to protect and serve! No one wants the police to take sides; just the opposite, we want unbias policing. If two groups are fighting in our streets, then all involved should be arrested! Innocent bystanders are getting hurt, and this must stop!
It has come to light that many higher-ranking officers within those police departments share the views of these groups like the Proud Boys. Where we don’t want to penalize anyone for their political opinions, such officers should be forced to recuse themselves in such a situation. If such fights are breaking out, then the police should be stepping in and arresting everyone involved! It is as Anti-American as anyone could be to be allowing the police to be showing favoritism! The police are not supposed to be judge and jury; their job is to keep the streets safe. Police favoritism is a violation of the very oaths that all of those officers took. This looking the other way must stop before we begin to see massive bloodshed. We don’t want to see anyone dying from one of these altercations, no matter which side they may be on.
If two opposing groups want to fight, then rent a coliseum, divide the groups equally, sell tickets and hire referees, but if the fighting is taken to the streets, the police must arrest all and sort out the mess in court! Thank you for reading this letter.
